2010 FHL Mock Draft

By: Joe Rogers

Round 1

1. Jets – Chad Kanz – This pick gives the Jets arguably the best three players in the league, and the best two players in FHL history. FHL defenses have always game-planned to attempt to contain Barca or Kanz. It is scary to think how anyone would try to stop both of them. Campbell has been rumored to be fielding numerous offers, but it is hard to fathom would it would take to move up to the top overall pick. In my opinion, the only thing that could prompt a trade is the rumor that Kanz isn’t overly excited about flying with the Jets. OTHER OPTIONS: none. Kanz will be selected here, it’s just a matter of what team is making the selection.

2. Boyle – Zack Wahal – The 2009-10 FHL champs scuffled through the year due to attendance and chemistry issues until GM Brian Grise made the blockbuster move to acquire the since retired Mark Fetsko. Don’t expect Grise to wait too long to pick up his linemate this year. Although Wahal doesn’t fit the typical Lancer style, his precision passing and scoring touch should complement Grise’s gritty style. They could look to a Buddy Doyle or Dave Gilson to really stabilize the defense, but I think Tom Fetsko can anchor a defense regardless of his partner on the backline. OTHER OPTIONS: Buddy Doyle, Dave Gilson

3. Kings – Buddy Doyle – Several options for the Kings here, especially because they have no offensive or defensive anchor to build around. Despite incredible leadership and intangibles, the core of Jamie Zelena and Ben Bobick pales in comparison to some of the other “Top Two’s” around the league. I like Doyle as a fit here because of his ability to both shutdown top scorers and contribute on the offensive side himself. OTHER OPTIONS: Zack Wahal, Dave Gilson, Matt Wierchowski

4. Crosbys – Matt Wierchowski – Commissioner John George has been a difficult GM to read and this year will be no different. He could go with a shut down defenseman here, knowing he can step up and be a grind-out style of forward if need be. Or he could go with the winger that helped Roy McDonald evolve into one of the best pure scorers in the league. It’s a tough call that most GM’s would love to make. If Doyle slips, I think that makes George’s decision easier. OTHER OPTIONS: Buddy Doyle, Zack Wahal, Dave Gilson

5. Pirates – Dave Gilson – GM Andrew McDonald will almost assuredly go with defense with this pick, and Gilson is the perfect fit. He brings a shot-blocking ability that successful teams have relied on. McDonald’s career has seen teams assembled around top offensive talent, but that has not been the recipe for success. The Pirates have not had any shutdown defenseman since their FHL debut, with the exception of Jeff Rogers and Buddy Doyle for brief stints. OTHER OPTIONS: Buddy Doyle, Nick Siniawski, Ryan Cleary

6. Moose – Nick Siniawski – The Moose dominated the early part of the regular season last year, but stumbled later on. The trade that was supposed to spark the Green Machine ended up sparking the eventual champions. GM and big brother Zack has played with his younger brother Nicky over the better part of the past two years with missed success. They stumbled out of the gate early with the Pirates two years ago, but thrived after a trade that sent them to Boyle. Last year, after Nick came over in the Fetsko trade, the Moose showed sparks of talent but never really put it all together.
