2010 FHL Mock Draft

By: Joe Rogers

Round 1

1. Jets – Chad Kanz – This pick gives the Jets arguably the best three players in the league, and the best two players in FHL history. FHL defenses have always game-planned to attempt to contain Barca or Kanz. It is scary to think how anyone would try to stop both of them. Campbell has been rumored to be fielding numerous offers, but it is hard to fathom would it would take to move up to the top overall pick. In my opinion, the only thing that could prompt a trade is the rumor that Kanz isn’t overly excited about flying with the Jets. OTHER OPTIONS: none. Kanz will be selected here, it’s just a matter of what team is making the selection.

2. Boyle – Zack Wahal – The 2009-10 FHL champs scuffled through the year due to attendance and chemistry issues until GM Brian Grise made the blockbuster move to acquire the since retired Mark Fetsko. Don’t expect Grise to wait too long to pick up his linemate this year. Although Wahal doesn’t fit the typical Lancer style, his precision passing and scoring touch should complement Grise’s gritty style. They could look to a Buddy Doyle or Dave Gilson to really stabilize the defense, but I think Tom Fetsko can anchor a defense regardless of his partner on the backline. OTHER OPTIONS: Buddy Doyle, Dave Gilson

3. Kings – Buddy Doyle – Several options for the Kings here, especially because they have no offensive or defensive anchor to build around. Despite incredible leadership and intangibles, the core of Jamie Zelena and Ben Bobick pales in comparison to some of the other “Top Two’s” around the league. I like Doyle as a fit here because of his ability to both shutdown top scorers and contribute on the offensive side himself. OTHER OPTIONS: Zack Wahal, Dave Gilson, Matt Wierchowski

4. Crosbys – Matt Wierchowski – Commissioner John George has been a difficult GM to read and this year will be no different. He could go with a shut down defenseman here, knowing he can step up and be a grind-out style of forward if need be. Or he could go with the winger that helped Roy McDonald evolve into one of the best pure scorers in the league. It’s a tough call that most GM’s would love to make. If Doyle slips, I think that makes George’s decision easier. OTHER OPTIONS: Buddy Doyle, Zack Wahal, Dave Gilson

5. Pirates – Dave Gilson – GM Andrew McDonald will almost assuredly go with defense with this pick, and Gilson is the perfect fit. He brings a shot-blocking ability that successful teams have relied on. McDonald’s career has seen teams assembled around top offensive talent, but that has not been the recipe for success. The Pirates have not had any shutdown defenseman since their FHL debut, with the exception of Jeff Rogers and Buddy Doyle for brief stints. OTHER OPTIONS: Buddy Doyle, Nick Siniawski, Ryan Cleary

6. Moose – Nick Siniawski – The Moose dominated the early part of the regular season last year, but stumbled later on. The trade that was supposed to spark the Green Machine ended up sparking the eventual champions. GM and big brother Zack has played with his younger brother Nicky over the better part of the past two years with missed success. They stumbled out of the gate early with the Pirates two years ago, but thrived after a trade that sent them to Boyle. Last year, after Nick came over in the Fetsko trade, the Moose showed sparks of talent but never really put it all together.

Top 10 Available

by Adam Cristallini
The Franklin Hockey League heads into Draft Week 2010 with anticipation building as it always does. This year’s draft will be even more special as it marks the return of the league’s most prolific and dominating scorer, Chad Kanz. Where Kanz will end up is the mystery everyone is wanting to solve. It is almost the surest bet that he will be taking number one overall, but there’s catch. There almost always is one it seems too. It’s that Kanz does not, and has publicly said he does not want to play with the Jets (who have the first pick) and Franchise Player Brian Barca. There’s simply no bond between the two hockey players, and that has made the draft even more interesting. Kanz can either single handedly change a team’s season around on his own or make everyone around him better, he is just too valuable. Some have gone as far to say that he will take over the career points record by sometime in early February, and possibly have his team sitting undefeated for most of the year. There’s a lot expected from his return and that’s why he is this year’s Best Available Player for the 2010 FHL Draft. Now, we took a look at numbers 2 through 10. At #2 sits Buddy Doyle, one of the best offensive defensemen in the game. His ability to score, pass, and even give up the body on D makes a very wanted player for any of the six teams. #’s 3, 4, and 5 can go either way. And those three players are Ryan Cleary, Jason Tatrai and Jason Kortz. It is believed by a few that these three guys quietly would make the biggest difference for their respected teams a year ago, now they’ll be rewarding going in the first round. Thomas Sheetz comes in at number 6. After having a great first year in the league and proving to be a tough guy that can score. He looks to be a difference maker for the team that makes a grab for him. # 7 has Matt “Mitch” Wierchowski. The upbeat always enthusiastic forward is still fast and is a scorer that can be counted on in the clutch. From 8 through 10 almost five different players can squeeze into the best available spots, so look for players like Mike Cullen, Shane Lucas, Adam Cristallini, Nick Siniawski, and Drew Hruska to have an immediate impact for their clubs this season. Also Ryan Marion, Jay Haddad, Matt Gori and Ryan Stottlemeyer will look to go high as well within the first 3 rounds. In other FHL News, and everyone who has been wondering, someone was spotted up at Franklin Primary today and has told league officials that the fence behind the net on the parking lot side has been fixed, which is great news for the grinders out there…Commissioner John George has extended his “Lazy Sunday” streak to 45 straight weeks
