Commissioner's Corner - Andrew McDonald
In the second segment of "The Commissioners Corner", FHL commissioner John George talks with Pirates Captain and FHL Director of Operations, Andrew McDonald. The FHL Trade Deadline was a hot topic during the interview, as well as the Pirates chances this season.
Andrew, this is your 2nd season as an FHL GM. Is trade deadline week the most stressful part of the job?
That along with any week in the FHL Playoffs. I've been working the phones, checking emails, doing it all so far this week just trying to improve the chances of my team. As a GM in the league, you tend to lose a lot of sleep over it. But that comes with the job description, no one said being a GM in the FHL was an easy job.
Absolutely. Do you intend on making another huge splash before the 11pm deadline friday? Players and fans of the eague cant pretend they havent heard the rumors swirling around.
Theres many things that are discussed behind the scenes. Honestly, I don't see too much happening. Maybe a minor deal here or there to improve depth at a few positions. But if you're looking for a huge trade or two like last season, you're looking at the wrong place. But once again, anything could happen come Friday night.
Like many of the GM's in this league, you've made your fair share of deals in the past. Which player was the hardest to inform that you had traded him away?
I'm going to have to go with this season's trade of Buddy Doyle. We're great friends off the ice, and he's a great player. We had a nice plan for this team, but something else came up. It was an emotional conversation, but he and I both realize, thats the FHL. It's a business.
What advice do you have for other captains as they approach the deadline of 11pm friday night?
My first piece of advice would be don't party (for the 21 and over captains). Haha, but seriously. I'd say just keep your phones on, and don't count anything or anyone out. I remember last year, I didn't think I would of made a move, but Matt Gori came to me at 10:30 with a proposal, and we talked about it for a few minutes. It got done. Anything can happen before that 11 P.M. deadline.
Thanks for your time Andrew.
Thank you, Commissioner.
