Week Two: Game Recaps

For the second straight week, The Hawks were forced to play in the worst conditions of the day. However that didn't stop them from notching their 2nd win in a row by sweeping Andrew McDonald's Pirates. Gary Gerson and Chad Kanz continued their dominance together as Gary racked up 4 consecutive goals, with Kanz chipping in the other Hawks tally of the game, a stunning backhand shot falling down. This was the series capper in Game 3’s Overtime. Tony Bonacorso was the only Pirate able to make his way onto the stat sheet for the boys in red, scoring the first goal in each game, bringing his season total to 6. The Pirates, leading 1-0 in all 3 games, blew leads as Gerson and Kanz took matters into their own hands. The icy surface made for a sloppy series, with players hitting the deck left and right. Although The Pirates were handed a crushing loss, McDonald remained confident in his teams play. "Well ya know it was a tough loss, especially getting swept. The conditions weren't helping us win the game, but you gotta take what you're given. I wouldn't say the Hawks outplayed us, we were up 1-0 each game, but ya know, we just gotta defend our lead. This week we didn't. We'll be fine for the rest of the season, I like our chances". Game 2 was a 1-1 contest, which went into a shootout. Matt Gori's Hawks are now the only team without a blemish on their record, and they'll take their 2-0 mark into next week’s 12:30 game against a tough Bishop Boyle team. STATS • Gary Gerson (8) and Chad Kanz (7), rank 1st and 2nd in the FHL in points. • Tony Bonacorso (6) has two-thirds of the Pirates 9 team goals. - Game 2 featured the first meeting between Crosby’s captain John George, and his former teammate and mentor Bill Seaman of The Kings. The Crosby’s got goals from Roy McDonald, Matt Wierchowski, and Brian Hreha to beat the Kings in 4 games. The Kings got tallies from Jeff Pingor, Adam Cristallini, and Mark Zelena, but to no avail. Games 2 and 4 were both scoreless battles heading into shootouts. Brian Hreha and Mike Pavasko scored the winners for the Crosby’s. The game was a physical slugfest with big hits being delivered all day, mostly by the captains Jamie "Chink" Zelena, and George. The Kings played their hearts out in game 4, but the Crosby defense as well as the goaltending of Dave Kwolek, kept the Kings offense off the score sheet. Forward Adam Cristallini had this to say inside a disappointed Kings locker room. "Yanno its just tough to lose like this two weeks in a row, shoot outs. I don't know what else we can do to win, it's just tough right now." A rejuvenated Crosby’s team looks to keep the momentum going, as they prepare to take on the defending champion Jets next week at 11:00. The Kings will go to war with The Pirates at 2:00. STATS • Mike Pavasko is now a career 3 for 3 in shootouts • Despite being the only winless team (0-2), The Kings lead the league in goals (13). - Game 3 was a defensive struggle between The Jets and Bishop Boyle, with both teams hampered by the surface conditions. Mark Fetsko, Dave Morus, and Tom Fetsko all scored to propel the Jets to their first win of the season, in turn handing Boyle their first loss in this 3-0-shutout sweep. Mark Fetsko also scored the winning shootout goal in overtime of Game 2. With Dustin Hess out of the lineup for Bishop Boyle, they had absolutely nothing to offer the defending champs. Not known for their defense, The Jets managed to become the first team in FHL history to not allow a goal in an entire series. Jets captain Zak Campbell seemed fortunate to come away with the victory. "Neither team could do much offensively because the surface was so poor. These types of games really challenge teams resilience and stamina. Positional defense and maximum effort is needed. I think both teams possessed these attributes and the game could have swung either way. Fortunately, it ended in our favor." Bishop Boyle hopes to rebound next week against the undefeated Hawks, while The Jets prepare to take on the Crosby’s. STATS • Bishop Boyle has allowed the least amount of goals in the league (6), however they have also only scored a league low (4). • Dave Morus’ Game 2 goal was the first of his FHL Career.
