FHL Mock Draft
Round 1
1. Boyle (from Jets) D Jeff Rogers - the founding father of Bishop Boyle returns. Without a doubt the most talented defenseman in the league, and very likely the most coveted overall player on the board.. He’s a wall defensively, and combines good hands and a ridiculous snap shot to add to his offensive upside. Look for him to pick up the hitting even more now that he’s back with the Lancers. Other options: NONE, forgot. Rogers is their guy, that’s why they gave up so much to get him.
2. Hawks F/D Jay Cherep - I have no firsthand knowledge of this player but I spoke with GM Matt Gori personally and he stated "Yeah. We are going to take Jay Cherap." He’s a friend and teammate of Hawks franchise player Kanz, so their chemistry could be scary. He can play both offense and defense and is rumored to have tremendous puck control and a solid shot. Other options: if I can trust Gori, none
3. Crosbys F Nick Siniawski - I originally slated his going with the first pick in round 2 but this guy’s stock has sky-rocketed. Personally, my favorite player in the FHL, he’s dominated the off-season pickup games. Combines hands and size unparalleled in the league. Can bring the physical presence as well. Recent scar from his brother on the bridge of his nose makes Chaz’s boy even more intimidating. A leader on and off the ice, he’s versatile enough to be an impact player anywhere he plays. He seems to be too much for George to pass up. Other options: M. Wierchowski
4. Jets F Matt Wierchowski - Campbell will be tempted to take the leagues newest big man, especially with Barca in his ear, but I think Mitch is too much for him to pass up. He knows what he’s getting, and he’ll be happy to bring back the career Jet. He’s a high energy guy with a motor that never stops. Has a knack for finding the net. Consider him the Tyler Kennedy of the FHL and a guy every GM wants on their roster Other options: J. Tatrai, N. Siniawski
5.Pirates D Roy McDonald IV - originally I had GM Andrew waiting to take his brother in Round 2, but John George picking before him in round 2 forces McDonald’s hand. He’ll be happy to have him though. He is quietly one of the more sound defenseman in the game who throws in a touch of offense as well. Slap shot can be lethal from the point. He has enough faith in Roy to let anyone else join the rush and leave him on an island. Other options: Hruska, Wierchowski, T. Fetsko, M. Fetsko
6. Kings F Drew Hruska - desperate for scoring, they find it in arguably the best pure scorer on the board. The guy can flat out fill the net. Look for him to benefit from the best passing defenseman the league has ever seen in Bill Seamen. I see him scoring close to 50 goals, but he needs to play alongside more of a distributor if he hopes to reach his full potential. Could be scary good if that happens. Other options: N. Siniawski, Gerson
Round 2
7. Crosbys (from Kings) D Jason Tatrai - GM George would be happy to have this big guy fall into his lap and "replace" Seamen on his back line. Apparantly will be the biggest player in the FHL by far. I’ve heard him described as "Towering." Little is known about what he brings to the table. Don’t be shocked if he’s taken by the Jets in Round 1. Has Boyle blood in him (relative of Bill "Tat" Tatrai, former Mr. Everything as a Lancer in the 70's) Other options: Drane. M. Fetsko, Hreha
8. Pirates D Zack Siniawski- McDonald will think about other
options but he’ll have a tough time overlooking a guy who he established some chemistry with last year. He likes the wiley veteran’s leadership and dedication, and if Roy is already on the backline, GM Andrew will trust his brother enough to have Siniawski join the rush like he often likes to do. Has the tendency to make critical mistakes when doing so. Some may say his game has slipped over the years, but he’s looked closer to his 2006 form in the offseason and he fits into the Pirates lineup well. Amazing character guy, any GM would be happy to have him. Other options, Roy III., Hruska, Gerson
9. Jets (from Boyle) D/F Tom Fetsko- Mark Fetsko is tempting here but I think they’ll go with someone they can count on being there week in and week out. The "other" Fetsko slips a little further than I originally planned, but others drafted ahead of him seem to fits team’s plans better. Even though he was injured last year, we all know what this guy brings to the table. Was an impact player on THE DUCKS and was given little opportunity offensively. Capable of playing forward or defense, he’ll fit in well anywhere on either of the 4 man rotations the Jets like to run. Other options: M. Fetsko, Z. Siniawski, D. Rojtas
10. Crosbys F M. Fetsko - rumor has it Fetsko contacted GM George personally and expressed interest in the Crosbys. Would have likely been the Jets franchise player if attendance wasn’t a major issue. Arguably the best overall player in the league. Good shot, tremendous physical presence (trust me, he laid me out). Hands, defense, passing. Total package. Scary good. Other options: Z. Siniawksi, B. Hreha, A. Cristallini
11. Hawks D Dan Drane- With Kanz up front, this team turns to a solid defenseman and a wiley veteran. Brings the physical presence to protect Kanz. I wouldn’t expect many liberties to be taken. Foot speed is an issue, but what he lacks in speed he more than makes up with his heart and sheer will to prevent the opponent from getting past him. Tremendous character guy. Championship on his resume.. Other options: M. Fetsko, Gerson, Rojtas, Cristallini
12. Jets F/D Gabe Gerson- Campbell’s looking to keep his core together. Gerson is the next step in that process. Gerson has the ability to play both forward and defenseman effectively which fits well in their 2-line system. Plans to bring his attendance issues from last season up. Sneaky shot (who can forget the game-tying goal when he was with Boyle) and a damn solid defenseman. Makes very few mistakes. Other options: Rojtas, Cristallini, Wahal
Round 3
13. Jets F Zack Wahal - Had scary chemistry with Campbell in his previous stint with the Jets. One of the better pure scorers in the league and was in the heat of the JBK (just behind Kanz) in the MVP race for most of the season. Attendance slipped, along with his numbers later in the year. Can really fill the back of the net. Other options: Rojtas, Hreha, Cristallini
14. Hawks F Brian Hreha - Was an impact player on a Flyers team that lost most of their roster by season’s end. Very versatile, can play both up and back. He’ll sneak through the draft this far without much of a look, but could be the most underrated player in the league. Could be a huge steal with talent around him. Other options: Cristallini, Wahal
15. Crosbys F Shane Lucas - His hockey skills are uncertain, but he’s a SV soccer player so look at his predecessors (Hess, Campbell, Wahal). Probably most comparable to Hess. Could be this year’s breakout player of the year. Sweeper in soccer, but could contribute at both ends at Franklin. Natural leader judging by what I’ve seen on the soccer field. Rarely if ever makes mistakes, and readily cleans up after others. Look out for this kid. Other options: Cristallini, Rogers
16. Jets (from Boyle) D Dan Rojtas - they continue to keep their Championship core intact by adding one of the more efficient 2 way players in the league. Quietly he was arguably the most improved player last season and the career Jet might actually get even better this season. Can move the puck as well as any backliner in the league other than Rogers and Seamen and he made few mistakes in his sophomore season. Other options: Rogers
17. Pirates D Joe Rogers - they were both Lancers last year. Doesn’t like to handle the puck much, He brings little to no offense to the table (2 career goals) but there’s no doubt he leads the league in blocked shots. Don’t expect him to try and move the puck with passes from his own zone. He prefers the dump and chase. Not fast by any means, but quicker than most people realize. Has the ability to bring a physical game but is often too nice of a guy to do so. Other options: Roy III,
18. Kings F/D Jim "Beans" Johnson - the league’s version of Sean Avery. Complete asshole at times, but still mans to be one of the more classy guys in the league. Fact: John George hates this kid. That’s how effective an agitator he can be. He has a sneaky shot and can play everywhere on the ice (and often times seems to literally BE everywhere on the ice.) He’s the perfect spark plug for a Kings organization trying to get out of the league’s basement. Other options: Klocek, Rogers, M. Cullen, Gilson
Round 4
19 Kings D Dave Gilson - finally out of the net, we get to see if this bruising defenseman still has it in him. Little skill with the puck, but likes to use his body and play physical. Naturally, he has a tendency to get in the way, especially blocking shots.. Other options: Klocek, Doyle, Pander, Cullen
20.Pirates F Ryan Cleary - Little known about this guy. Has shown bright spots in pick-up games in the off season and his an impeccable chemistry with good friend Bonacorso. Could be a poor man’s version of Dustin Hess, and could also be just as much of a steal at this point. I wouldn’t expect the Pirates to let this guy slip any further. Other options: McDonald III., Doyle, Klocek, Pander
21.Boyle (from Jets) D Jim Klocek - They’ll try and trade up to get the other Rogers, but if not they’d love to get their hands on another alcoholic, and Klocek fits the billing. His talent level is well above 4th round, but Boyle could be the only organization capable of dragging him out on the ice every Saturday. Years of ice hockey experience, a ridiculous shot, and any kind of motivation will propel him into the league’s elite. Not to mention this guy wears the best jerseys in the league. Prediction: if he’s Boyle, he’s this year’s most improved player. Other options: Rogers but unlikely, Gilson, Doyle, Pander, Cullen
22. Crosbys D Buddy Doyle - first round talent, but attendance issues cause his stock to plummet in my books. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a GM take a chance on him long before this point. This guy is full of energy, and brings a little bit of offense to the table. He blocks a ton of shots, and can only make your team better. The more I type this, the more I keep thinking he’ll be gone by now but I’m still not sure you can take a chance with the kind of every-week talent that was taken ahead of him. Other options: Cullen, Pander
23. Hawks D Danny Laird - kid’s an athlete, and Gori has known him since they were all stars in little league. Look for him to be an impact player. Plays both soccer and baseball which is promising in the FHL (see Kyle Thomas, Zack Campbell, etc) Other options: Cullen, Pander, Zelena
24. Boyle (from Jets) F/D Mike Cullen - friend of GM Grise. Soccer player, natural athlete who will play all over the place. Works out well considering the limited ice times the Lancer bench will see. Other options, Pander, Sabo
