Week Three: 3 Stars

Zack Wahal Jets 1 Goals, 4 Assists, 5 Points Zack Wahal is one of three Jets who made the 3 Stars for Week 3. The Jets beat the Crosby's in 5 Games, but it didn't seem to be that close. Wahal was one of the Jets leaders in his first game of the FHL Season. Wahal assisted on 4 Goals, and added a tally of his own. His 5 point effort helped the Jets

Week Three: Game Recaps

Munhall was buzzing Saturday night, as the FHL provided another action packed day of hackey. The Jets lit up the Crosby's in five games, Boyle shut down the Hawks in four, and the Kings took down the Pirates in a deciding game five.
For the early game the Jets and Crosby's went to battle in a very weird series. Despite nearly losing the series in five games, the Jets piled on eleven goals compared to the Crosby's two throughout the series. Captain Zak Campbell led the charge for the Jets scoring four goals as well as recording two helpers. However the win for the Jets was a total team effort as they got points from Ryan Sabo, Zack Wahal, Brian Barca, and the Fetsko's (Mark and Tom). Roy McDonald tallied both Crosby goals on the day, as he continues to be the one consistent presence for them on offense. After dropping game one to the Crosby's in a shootout (Hreha and Wierchowski with the goals), the Jets found their grove in games two and three, outscoring the Crosby's 7-0 combined. Costly turnovers and mental breakdowns on the Crosby's part led to the deserved thrashing. After regrouping to shut out the Jets in game four, the blue bombers took home the victory in game five with two big goals by Sabo in the final minutes. Despite a frustrated Crosby's locker room after the game, the team said they feel there is a lot to learn from the loss and remains positive. "We know what got us beat and we know how to fix it, once we start playing as a team and commit to our system, we'll be a tough team to compete with." Those being the words of Crosby's captain John George. The Crosby's will next square off against the Pirates, with the Jets facing off against the Hawks for the first time since the 2008 FHL Cup.
In the 2nd game of Saturday's action, Bishop Boyle stunned many critics as they tamed the two-headed monster of Chad Kanz and Gary Gerson, holding them both scoreless as they won in four games. The Hawks lone goal, and win was all in Game 1 as Ryan Marino buried the winner in a 1-0 victory for Matt Gori's Hawks. After that it was all Boyle defense as they didn't allow another score. They only needed one goal each game (all coming in overtime) to rattle off three straight wins. Gabe Gerson, Brian Grise, and Jeff Rogers, all scored game winners to propel Boyle to a 3-1 record. Things got chippy throughout the contest, but nothing compared to the confrontation between red-headed brothers Gabe and Gary Gerson. Gary took exception to the way Gabe was using the body in front of the net and nearly threw down with his younger sibling. These sort of antics allowed the Boyle boys to take Gary and Kanz off their game and ultimately get them the win. Bishop Boyle sees the Kings for the first time in their next match up, while the Hawks look for revenge against the red hot Jets. The Kings finally got off the schnide this week, as they beat the heavily favored Pirates in five games. Adam Cristallini, Drew Hruska, and Ed Tomcik all scored to help the Kings upset the Buccos. Captain Andrew McDonald and sharpshooter Tony Bonacorso got the Pirate tallies in the losing effort. The Kings battled back from a 2-1 series deficit to grab the thrilling victory, led the whole way by veteran Bill Seaman who played one of his greatest games ever in the deciding game 5. Pirate fan favorite Joe "Package" Rogers described Seaman to be "literally all over the ice" in game 5. This loss for the Pirates is their 2nd in a row and already management is looking at all options on how to "turn the ship in the right direction". On the other end of the spectrum, the Kings were ecstatic after the win, the first of Jamie "Chink" Zelena's career as captain. The Kings look to keep the momentum going against Bishop Boyle. The Pirates will do battle the Crosby's.

Roy McDonald IV Crosby's 2 Goals, 2 Points Roy McDonald IV of the Crosby's scored two goals in the 3-1 Series win against the Kings. Both of McDonald's goals came in Game One, including the first goal, and the final goal. Despite an 0-for-2 Shoot-Out performance, McDonald and teammates lead the Crosby's to their first win of the season.
Chad Kanz Hawks 1 Goal, 2 Assists, 3 Points Game Winning Goal FHL's version of the Two-Headed Monster includes Hawks' dynamic duo of Chad Kanz and Gary Gerson. Kanz has 62 career goals in the FHL, but none may be prettier than the Game 3, Overtime goal he scored against the Pirates this week. Kanz also assisted on 2 goals, both by Gerson, leading to the series sweep.
Gary Gerson Hawks 4 Goals, 1 Assist, 5 Points Game Winning Goal Continuing his performance from week one, Gary Gerson, lead the Hawks all game to a 3-0 sweep of the Pirates. Gerson scored the game tying, and game winning goal in Game 1 of the series, and continued to score tying goals in Game's 2 and 3 of the series. Gerson finds himself leading the league in goals(7) and points(8).

Week Two: Game Recaps

For the second straight week, The Hawks were forced to play in the worst conditions of the day. However that didn't stop them from notching their 2nd win in a row by sweeping Andrew McDonald's Pirates. Gary Gerson and Chad Kanz continued their dominance together as Gary racked up 4 consecutive goals, with Kanz chipping in the other Hawks tally of the game, a stunning backhand shot falling down. This was the series capper in Game 3’s Overtime. Tony Bonacorso was the only Pirate able to make his way onto the stat sheet for the boys in red, scoring the first goal in each game, bringing his season total to 6. The Pirates, leading 1-0 in all 3 games, blew leads as Gerson and Kanz took matters into their own hands. The icy surface made for a sloppy series, with players hitting the deck left and right. Although The Pirates were handed a crushing loss, McDonald remained confident in his teams play. "Well ya know it was a tough loss, especially getting swept. The conditions weren't helping us win the game, but you gotta take what you're given. I wouldn't say the Hawks outplayed us, we were up 1-0 each game, but ya know, we just gotta defend our lead. This week we didn't. We'll be fine for the rest of the season, I like our chances". Game 2 was a 1-1 contest, which went into a shootout. Matt Gori's Hawks are now the only team without a blemish on their record, and they'll take their 2-0 mark into next week’s 12:30 game against a tough Bishop Boyle team. STATS • Gary Gerson (8) and Chad Kanz (7), rank 1st and 2nd in the FHL in points. • Tony Bonacorso (6) has two-thirds of the Pirates 9 team goals. - Game 2 featured the first meeting between Crosby’s captain John George, and his former teammate and mentor Bill Seaman of The Kings. The Crosby’s got goals from Roy McDonald, Matt Wierchowski, and Brian Hreha to beat the Kings in 4 games. The Kings got tallies from Jeff Pingor, Adam Cristallini, and Mark Zelena, but to no avail. Games 2 and 4 were both scoreless battles heading into shootouts. Brian Hreha and Mike Pavasko scored the winners for the Crosby’s. The game was a physical slugfest with big hits being delivered all day, mostly by the captains Jamie "Chink" Zelena, and George. The Kings played their hearts out in game 4, but the Crosby defense as well as the goaltending of Dave Kwolek, kept the Kings offense off the score sheet. Forward Adam Cristallini had this to say inside a disappointed Kings locker room. "Yanno its just tough to lose like this two weeks in a row, shoot outs. I don't know what else we can do to win, it's just tough right now." A rejuvenated Crosby’s team looks to keep the momentum going, as they prepare to take on the defending champion Jets next week at 11:00. The Kings will go to war with The Pirates at 2:00. STATS • Mike Pavasko is now a career 3 for 3 in shootouts • Despite being the only winless team (0-2), The Kings lead the league in goals (13). - Game 3 was a defensive struggle between The Jets and Bishop Boyle, with both teams hampered by the surface conditions. Mark Fetsko, Dave Morus, and Tom Fetsko all scored to propel the Jets to their first win of the season, in turn handing Boyle their first loss in this 3-0-shutout sweep. Mark Fetsko also scored the winning shootout goal in overtime of Game 2. With Dustin Hess out of the lineup for Bishop Boyle, they had absolutely nothing to offer the defending champs. Not known for their defense, The Jets managed to become the first team in FHL history to not allow a goal in an entire series. Jets captain Zak Campbell seemed fortunate to come away with the victory. "Neither team could do much offensively because the surface was so poor. These types of games really challenge teams resilience and stamina. Positional defense and maximum effort is needed. I think both teams possessed these attributes and the game could have swung either way. Fortunately, it ended in our favor." Bishop Boyle hopes to rebound next week against the undefeated Hawks, while The Jets prepare to take on the Crosby’s. STATS • Bishop Boyle has allowed the least amount of goals in the league (6), however they have also only scored a league low (4). • Dave Morus’ Game 2 goal was the first of his FHL Career.
